Alana runs the Sydney Half Marathon
Alana runs the Sydney Half Marathon
Story
You may think Ive lost my marbles....
because on May 16th I will be running in the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon!!
This is my first half marathon. Yep, count them, thats a total of 21.1km. Ouch!
Training began on Jan 31st, and with the big day edging close, my mind and body are ready to complete this challenge.
I would love your support - more to the point, I would love you to help me support the fantastic work of The 40K Foundation Australia.
40K is a youth led, not-for-profit organisation doing inspiring work in Bangalore (India). They take a grassroots approach to working with exploited quarry workers and their children in order to improve basic health and educational opportunities for the future of these grossly impoverished communities.
In fact, this October 40K will be completing their maiden project: the establishment of a bridging school in the slums of Bangalore. This school will accommodate 150 children and provide remedial education to enable the community's youth to join mainstream education, and eventually, the workforce.
Health and education is at the heart of eradicating extreme poverty and the 40K Foundation's bridging school is a direct approach to creating self-sufficient communities from despair.
Most impressively this project has been funded from the pockets of everyday Aussies like ourselves.
In support of The 40K Foundation's achievement, and to help promote their cause, I will be running the half marathon with a piece of granite from a quarry in Bangalore.
Yes, if it wasn't the distance that had you thinking I had lost my marbles, then its the fact that I'll be carrying a lumpy bumpy piece of rock as I run for over two hours, that has you convinced Im raving mad!
Should I succeed, 40K promises me "eternal glory" by being entered into the 40K Golden Granite Hall of Fame. Sounds damn awesome to me!!
PLEASE HELP ME ACHIEVE ETERNAL GLORY BY CLICKING ON THE GREEN BUTTON "DONATE NOW".
Then go to www.40k.com.au for more info on the great work of The 40K Foundation Australia.
With much love and appreciation,
Alana xx

EDUCATION CHANGES LIVES Rohit’s mother decided that the family should forgo the income he could have earned from the age of ten, in favour of putting him through the local school system. However, the quality of the education was so poor that he failed his year ten exams, and now works in the same local quarry as those who never finished school. A lack of adequately resourced schools in rural India causes many primary school-aged children - 51% of girls, and 41% of boys - to abandon their education in favour of exploitative labour, which pays them less than $1.50 per day. Bad education is no better than no education. The 40K Plus Program provides disadvantaged, primary school-age children in rural India, with a solid grounding in English and numeracy, access to technology, books, and life skills, so that they can benefit from opportunities for further education and employment that are comparable to those enjoyed by children from more financially secure families. $10,000 will pay for the set up and running costs of one centre for 25 kids, for an entire year: just $400 will create a place for one child, for an entire year.
