Will to Walk

Story

The Challenge:

To walk the 800km path of the French Camino from St Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees to the corridors of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, then knocking on the door of Portugal. I will make this journey with my wife Corrie over a period of 12 weeks and for the following purposes:

  • To embark on a ‘peregrinus’, a journey abroad. This pilgrimage is primarily to promote greater awareness of Parkinson’s disease and is dedicated to those who suffer from its many forms
  • To raise funds for 'Shake It Up', an organisation dedicated to finding a cure for this disease and where every dollar raised is used solely to this end
  • To reflect and 'smell the poppies’ for as long as the journey takes

About me:

I am in the early stages of Parkinson’s (five years since diagnosis). My symptoms include a decline in muscle movement; occasional muscle spasm and internal trembling of the left side of my body and mouth; intermittent external trembling of my left arm; restless arms and legs; decreased facial expressions; an abnormally high production of phlegm; tiredness; and lower voice intonation. These symptoms have mostly remained unchanged since diagnosis.

This walk is about showcasing that life doesn't end with Parkinson's, in my case it has given me a kick-start to live an rich life and working towards the best possible outcome.

About Shake It Up

Shake It Up Australia Foundation together with our partner at The Michael J. Fox Foundation are the largest non-government funder of Parkinson's research across multiple institutes in Australia.   Founded in 2011 we have funded over $11.5M in research targeted at finding better treatments and ultimately the cure.

The Foundation was established by Clyde Campbell, a father of three and business owner who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009 at the age of 44.

Clyde set out to find out as much as he could about the disease and determine what he could do in a practical sense to assist. His search led him to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) in the United States and the remarkable work they do to fund medical research targeted at finding better treatments on the path to a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

The approach MJFF takes to assessing, funding and project managing the world’s best research all over the globe eliminates redundancy, ensures efficiency and unites the global community in the quest to find a cure.

Clyde realised that funding Parkinson’s research was the best thing that he could do to help himself, his family and the 100,000 other Australians living with the disease. With that clear in his mind, Clyde founded Shake It Up Australia Foundation (SIUAF) to give other Australians the opportunity to join his quest.
