A few good men
Many of you would have seen the movie titled ‘A few good men’.
No, this blog is not about the movie, but rather the subject heading it self.
A few good men refers to the service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, risking their lives protecting the peace and freedom of those whose have been violated.
It is a perilous job that only an exceptional group of people are able to perform, and they are ‘a few good men/women’ of extraordinary calibre. To join this elite team, special groups of individuals are selected after they’ve passed comprehensive assessments and intensive training designed to push them beyond their limits. This crucial process assists in separating our warriors from mere mortals, and it is from here onwards, where the life they once knew will never be the same.
Whatever political agenda or rationale may be behind the deployment of our troops, one of the ethoses for these men and women is that they fight for the ones in need and willingly make the sacrifice so you and I don’t have to. Where ever the battle may lead them, they valiantly march onwards toward the uncertainty. They do not call themselves heroes, nor see themselves as one, but just regular men and women doing their job. Their chosen profession provides no assurance to life, and the definitive costs of war are drummed into their mind and the sacrifice they’ll have to make for the prize of freedom.
War is bloody and the indentations left behind are carnage, the imprint of nightmares, bitter memories for those who have fought in war and those who have lived through war.
They cannot talk about the things they’ve seen because words are not enough. They are haunted by the memories of war because it does not end when the last bullet has been fired. War continues on for decades, and to some, for the rest of their lives.
A country would try to rebuild, and its’ citizens are living every day with a sad reminder of what their lives once was. The warriors who survived would march home, carrying with them the scars of war in their mind and body.
We will never be able to fully comprehend what they’ve been through, unless we were there, fighting beside them. Body wounds may heal, but wounds to the mind, cut deep to the soul. Imbedded in their minds are the memories of the mates and brothers in arms who they have lost.
Our thoughts are to the men and women and their families who have sacrificed much. A loss of a husband who will never come home to his wife, a son who’ll never have the chance to tell his parents of his gratitude, and a father who will never know his unborn child. The least we could do is show our appreciation and never forget the sacrifice they have made or to the family and loved ones they’ve left behind. The legacy in their sons and daughters to carry on the name so that their Legacy may live on…… Lest we forget the ones we have lost and the ones who live on.
