Story
Hi Friends!
As you know, I come from a long line of camping adventurers. The next one is a cycle across the Gibb River Road with my sister Zoe, and our epic parents Caz and PJ on support crew duties. The Gibb River Road meanders from Derby to Kununurra in the Kimberley region of WA. In my opinion the most beautiful part of Australia.
We will be travelling through Nyinkina, Punuba, Unggumi, Ngarinyin, Miriwoong, Yawaru, Jukun, Nimanburu, Nyul Nyul, and Bardi lands.
Zo and I thought that this would be a great opportunity to raise awareness and do our little bit to help close the indigenous literacy gap by raising some moolahs for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).
Did you know - only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities. We can do better.
Apart from the historical, health, social, and educational disadvantage issues, many remote communities don’t have many, if any, books. Most of the remote communities that ILF work with report there are fewer than five books in family homes.
We'd love your support in sharing our good fortune, with and any contribution, big or small so greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your support
Prue and Zo

Indigenous Literacy Foundation
Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are much lower than anywhere else in Australia. Our purpose is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books - with a focus on early literacy and first language - but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories.
Please visit our website for more information about our programs.
