Cycle for Motor Neurone Disease
Cycle for Motor Neurone Disease
Story
Hi and thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
On the 28th of October 2012 I will be raising money for the Motor Neurone Research Institute of Australia by participating in the Fitz Challenge - a long distance mountain cycling challenge in the Brindabella Mountain Ranges - with my best friend Eli Dunn. The Challenge combines a gruelling 13.5 hours of cycling with 255km of Australia's most challenging cycling peaks. Neither Eli nor myself are competition or club cyclists. We both, however, love a challenge and a good cause.
In 2006 my father passed away from Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a neurological disease which progressively strips sufferers of their ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe. In Australia each day, one person is diagnosed, and another passes away from, MND. Tragically, over 50% of sufferers will pass away within fourteen months of their diagnosis. My father passed away just over twelve months from his own diagnosis. The steady demise of his ability to care for himself and communicate with his family and friends made these final months heart wrenching. There is no known cure for MND and current medicine has few answers besides palliative care as to increasing the quality of life of sufferers.
The Motor Neurone Research Institute of Australia is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to supporting research into MND. It directs funding towards study into the causes and potential cures of MND, as well as research into helping sufferers deal with the symptoms of the condition. It's efforts play a crucial role in improving the lives of sufferers and their families and will, hopefully in time, offer a solution to the problem.
Thank you for your donation and for taking the time to read this. If I make it to the finish line without a/several cardiac arrests I will make sure to thank you in person.
Warm Regards
Lachie Peattie
Motor Neurone Disease Research Australia
MND Research Australia funds projects led by Australia’s leading MND researchers. By supporting MNDRA you are sparking new discoveries and ideas to defeat MND by funding new research projects that aim to understand the causes, develop effective treatments, and one day find a cure.
It is only with research that the future of MND will change. Together we will defeat MND.
