Ocean Miles Making Meals
Ocean Miles Making Meals
Story
Sailing a leg of the 13/14 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race www.clipperroundtheworld.com from Brisbane Australia to Qingdao in China is 7400 nautical miles. If I can make a dollar for each mile sailed, OzHarvest is able to supply 7400 extra meals through collecting excess food from restaurants / catering companies / supermarkets and redistributing it to a wide variety of charities in Australia - quite a remarkable logistical feat!
Luckily I'm on the right team, my boat is PSP Logistics http://www.psp-logistics.com/ and you can follow our daily reports on the Clipper website (see above).
My destination port is China. A common greeting in China, equivalent to our "how are you" translates as "have you eaten?" The worlds most populous country with over 1.3 billion people, 20% of the world's population, yet about 80 million of them are now malnourished and hungry?? If worldwide there is enough food being produced to feed the planets population, the key lies in distribution; with much more strategy and foresight required then for ocean racing! Sailing may have been one of the original methods of transporting tea and spices, and now OzHarvest are doing a marvelous job of moving food around in Australia.
Each dollar equalling an extra meal (or even two) is the best value-for-money lunch shout you're likely to make, with the extended environmental benefits of diverting edible food from being wasted in landfill.
Thank you for your support.
