I'm participating in eviDent's "Reach the Beach" challenge in March 2023 to raise money for dental research.

Did you know that according the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's 2018/2019 report on health expenditure that the single disease condition with the highest expenditure was dental decay? Concurrently, in 2017-2021 Australia's largest research funding body, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), spent less than one percent of it's research budget on funding oral sciences research. (~0.23%).

A new paper in the most recent edition of the Australian Dental Journal published this month demonstrates how oral disorders have the most inequitable research funding based on the disease burden. The eviDent Foundation is a health promoting charity, an initiative of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (my professional association and workplace), and supports Australia's only Dental Practice Based Research Network. We build research capacity to produce, disseminate and use evidence that translates directly into dental practice and informs policy.
