YOLO - Living Life for The Living Centre

Story

Hello family and friends,

On the 16th of February 2012 my world was turned upside down when I was told that, at the age of 43, I had breast cancer, a disease to which I had already lost my grandmother and which my mum had also recently been diagnosed with.  Three generations of women, one disease.

Nothing can really prepare you for hearing those words but two long years down the road and feeling healthy again I know that I got through this experience with the love and support of family and friends and with the assistance of wonderful services such as The Living Centre in Melbourne's St Kilda Road.

Opened in July 2010, The Living Centre is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing emotional, practical and physical support to women and men diagnosed with breast cancer, their families and carers.  At The Living Centre the focus of all the programs and activities is on wellness not illness and their comprehensive program of services includes many which are unique and not available elsewhere.

The Living Centre is truly a sanctuary for patients providing a safe, nurturing, non-clinical environment where they have highly qualified and trained breast care nurses on staff to provide professional counselling and advice on coping strategies.  In addition to their own staff, they also have a dedicated group of volunteer professional therapists and facilitators who provide a range of services dealing with practical issues such as hair loss, wig fitting, relationship issues, getting back to work and a host of others.

The Living Centre is run solely as a charitable organisation in conjunction with The Think Pink Foundation and our dream is to eventually open a Living Centre in every capital city of Australia.

On Sunday the 2nd of March this year I have set myself the challenge of completing The Great Ocean Walk, a spectacular coastal hike that runs from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles, a distance of 104 kilometres.  With a group of mad friends (otherwise known as Team YOLO...You Only Live Once - Susan Williams, Sandy Whittington, Victoria Serfozo, Cinzia Mucciante, Mick Penwill, Russ Breguet, Sue DeLaRue) to encourage me on each sector along the way I plan on completing the hike over 6 days, finishing at the 12 Apostles on Saturday 08th of March.

I'm so excited by this challenge and hope that you will support me and the brave friends who have volunteered with me to raise money for The Think Pink Foundation.   We will welcome any contribution, great or small, that you could make!

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to The Think Pink Foundation.

Thanks so much for your support.

Whilst life can sometimes be a journey it's most important to also make sure it's an adventure!

YOLO :-)

With love,

Karen

The breast cancer journey is an emotional and physical roller coaster and a breast cancer diagnosis can bring a range of unexpected emotions.

Uncertainty and fear of the future, changes in personal and family relationships, a sense of isolation – these are just some of the emotions that may be felt when one is diagnosed.

Supportive care needs are present at any stage of a patient’s cancer journey. To meet these care needs, Think Pink continues to deliver programs and services to hundreds of people annually affected by cancer in urban, rural and regional areas.

“Simply put, our mission is to enable a better journey through breast cancer for patients and their families.”

Please consider helping us so we can maintain these FREE and important services - visit our website to view all our programs.
