Story
TWO SURVIVORS ON A LAP OF AUSTRALIA!
Hi there!
Did you know that 1 in 7 Australians over the age of 50 has some evidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In other words, 1.5 million Australians who are at risk of losing their sight.
AMD is responsible for half of all blindness and severe vision loss in Australia, but it does not have to be this way. Early detection is crucial to saving sight.
My name is Giles Cooper, I am 75yo and I live on the Gold Coast, Queensland. I bought a 1970 car model VW Type 3 Fastback as a rolling wreck back in 2019, and I spent the months of Covid lockdown in my garage rebuilding her. She is called Clementine because her VW paint colour is officially called Clementine. Between us we have a combined age of 118 and we would like to prove that age is no barrier to adventure!
We are driving on a lap of Australia, some 15,000 kilometers, starting in July 2023, not only to see more of our wonderful country, but most importantly to raise both awareness and much needed funds for research into aged-related macular degeneration and macular diseases as a whole. All going to plan, our journey will take just under 3 months and see us go through Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, then all the way back to Queensland!
My sister, as well as my best friend, both suffer from AMD and their lives are increasingly being restricted by the disease. I am doing this for them, and for everyone who is currently impacted by aged-related macular degeneration and other macular diseases.
All funds raised will go directly to the Macular Disease Foundation Australia and will help fund research into improved treatment and patient support today, and in the future. Research provides us with hope for a future where no one goes blind from macular disease.
Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to the Macular Disease Foundation Australia.
Thank you so much for your support!
