NIGHT IN A CAGE

Added notes 22nd May 2020

I decided to do my Night in a Cage during my recent hospital stay to remove my salivary gland which has been infected several times due to a large calcium stone lodged in my gland.

Life is full of irony and I can't help but think my surgery is very similar to what Asiatic Bears experience when they are imprisoned and their stomach bile is extracted from their body. Big difference though is my surgery is done with my permission and holds hope for recovery. These bears are held in cages as prisoners and the purpose of using their bile has no medicinal proof.

Please support my cause by helping me to raise awareness or by donation. No donation is too small!

Hi everyone,

I've been supporting Free the Bears Foundation for over 20 years. Mary Hutton, the founder of the foundation, is an inspiration to me - she founded the foundation from her home in Western Australia in 1993. Since then nearly 1,000 Sun Bears, Moon Bears and other Asiatic Bears have been saved from cruelties that are unimaginable. www.freethebears.org for more info.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has really brought home to people around the world just how much we take our freedom for granted - the ability to choose what you do and where you go, what you eat and who you spend time with are such fundamental basics in our lives that give us so much joy. This freedom has all too often been denied to bears being held in horrific conditions across Asia, and so what better time to lock ourselves in a cage and get just a glimpse of what life is like for these animals? Of course, we're hoping that many others will join us and encourage their friends and family to help sponsor for this challenge so that we're able to continue offering the hundreds of bears already in our sanctuaries the very best quality of life possible until the pandemic has passed and we can return to normality. I’d appreciate any contribution, big or small.

Myself and a bunch of awesome Free The Bears volunteers around Australia are spending a Night in a Cage (see my profile pic for an idea of where I'll be sleeping) to raise money to help feed hundreds of beautiful rescued bears during these tough times. All the usual fundraising activities have been cancelled due to the coronavirus.

Spending a night in a tiny cage also aims to raise awareness of the cruel conditions that many of these rescued bears come from. For example: two moon bears that were rescued most recently were kept in tiny cages for 18 years and 22 years each. My single night in a cage (see my profile pic, which is actually my guinea pigs' playpen but I'm sure they won't mind sharing)  is nothing compared to the horror they must have endured.

I'm asking for you to help. Your donation will feed and care for many bears - any contribution, big or small, is very much appreciated (e.g. $50 feeds one bear for 10 days, or $30 feeds a bear for 6 days!) but donations as little as $2 or $5 are just as valued and appreciated - whatever you can spare. All donated funds are sent over to the Free The Bears sanctuaries (in Vietnam, Cambodia and South East Asia) to feed and care for bears plus other wildlife rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Pics and videos of my night in a cage will be shared!

Thanks so much for your support of Free The Bears!

Much love and Bear Hugs

Dee

    Free The Bears Ltd

Free the Bears mission is to protect, preserve and enrich the lives of bears throughout the world. Over the past 25 years we've helped rescue over 950 bears. We currently operate rescued bear sanctuaries in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos and care for over 230 rescued bears. We've helped bring the centuries old Indian 'dancing' bear tradition to an end, removing over 500 bears from the streets of India and providing alternative livelihoods to the nomadic Kalandar gypsy families who had forced the bears to beg (the first Kalander student recently graduated university).

We work closely with our government partners to strengthen wildlife laws and enforcement and run education programmes which have helped hundreds of thousands of people learn of the importance of wildlife conservation. Our research and cub care programmes are world leaders, providing invaluable learnings which will help conserve the vulnerable bear species we work with - sun bears (the world's smallest and least understood bear species), moon bears (or Asiatic black bears) and Indian sloth bears.

Free the Bears began after our founder, Perth grandmother Mary Hutton, learnt of the horrific practice of bile extraction of caged moon bears in Asia. Since this time we've rescued many bears from the bear bile trade and prevented the industry getting a foothold in Cambodia. In the coming years we hope to see an end to bear bile extraction and farming in Vietnam and Laos, where just under 1,000 bears are still kept in terrible circumstances.

Despite our achievements, we have a long way to go to ensure the bears and other wildlife of SE Asia are protected and preserved. With limited suitable habitat available, our commitment to the rescued bears at our sanctuaries is lifelong, which can last up to 40 years. This requires a huge financial commitment - any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Please donate or register as a Bear Carer, and please come to visit our sanctuaries and see what we've been able to achieve. Thank you.
