NSW Barristers' Clerks Association

Story

IJM Australia is dedicated to protecting poor and disadvantaged people around the world from slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.  They partner with local authorities to rescue victims, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors and strengthen justice systems to break cycles of violence and exploitation.

IJM Australia have just launched their “Time for Justice” initiative, aimed at the legal profession, which calls on lawyers to donate the equivalent of one billable hour to raise sponsorship to enable the employment of 2 lawyers, 2 social workers and a paralegal to combat trafficking of children for sex in Cebu in the Philippines.

In the crowded charitable arena, we believe that IJM is an organisation that makes an important difference to the lives of some the most marginal and vulnerable members of society, and the Clerks’ Association Committee has voted to support this initiative.  To kick-start fundraising efforts the Committee will donate $1,000 to “Time for Justice”.  I urge all clerks to consider supporting this initiative, either on an individual chambers basis or through this page.

Alternatively, chambers and barristers may consider providing in-kind support including pro bono assistance as needed by IJM, undertaking education of local practitioners, or even volunteering.

We will be lobbying the Bar Association to support this initiative, and also the 2014 Silk to consider making IJM a beneficiary of their 2014 donation.

International Justice Mission Australia

International Justice Mission Australia partners with IJM globally to deliver programs overseas bringing rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to ensure that public justice systems – police, courts and laws – effectively protect the poor.

Your donation will go to our Time For Justice campaign. These funds will sponsor local IJM lawyers and social workers working to make the vulnerable children of Cebu safe from sex trafficking.
