Beard For a Year
Beard For a Year
Story
In 2012 via the wonderful world of twitter.
I found a fellow beard enthusiast @ahails.
A beard visionary - @ahails decided to grow a Beard for a Year - curious wonder and tenacious strength of character grew a beard of note.
From this legacy an underground charity movement has begun.
The annual Beard for a Year challenge.
Beard For a Year Rules
- 1. Grow and craft that beard to a length of superior manliness
- 2. Beard on for the period of one calendar year
- 3. Donate a Dollar a Day to your chosen charity
- 4. Recruit a worthy advocate to carry the torch of Beard for a Year for the next year
So for the year of 2013 - i have begun crafting & bearding for Beard for a Year 2013 - A mass of hair - all performance enhancing drug free!
Every cent of money raised over the year of 2013 will be directed to CiKa @ The Royal Childrens Hospital
For every donation received there will be a small momento, prize or reward!
Here are 5 options to consider
- 1. Donate anything over $1 receive a Beard for the Year badge
- 2. Donate $30 and receive a Beard for a Year bumper sticker
- 3. Donate $50 dye or fashion the beard for a year to your liking
- 4. Wanna join in but your boss is not as cool as mine?! Simply donate $100 to become a Beard Brother for a Month, then you take Beard leave! Get yourself a collectors item 'Weirdo with a Beardo' Tee Shirt on me
- 5. Match the $1 a day for one year ($365) be the one that gets to kill the beard on NYD 2014 (** please note BY REQUEST of THE BEARDS 24th Feb & personal Beard love this clause is nullified - The Beard stays! No Razor will harm this piece of art!) So... Match a $1 a day & gain international 'AWESOME' status, get a free tee and i will buy you a ticket to the next Beards gig in Melbourne!
- You can also get your Beard ON! - via a new T-Shirt - Check out my online store via this link http://beardforayear.communitee.com.au/home
WHY!...
This.
This is Why!
Over 140 children under 15 years of age are diagnosed with cancer each year in Victoria and 90% of these children are treated at the Royal Children's Hospital.
CIKA (Cancer in Kids assoc) is committed to providing funding for research into solid tumours, the most common group of childhood cancers. Solid tumours include Wilms' tumour, neuroblastoma, osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma.
Apart from the influence of genetic factors, inherited conditions and exposure to ionising radiation, little is known of the cause(s) of childhood cancers and nothing can be done to prevent them. Therefore, the need to continue the financial support of research into childhood cancer is imperative.
The hopes and dreams of CIKA are to stop children from ever contracting these types of cancer, but if they do, to ensure that the treatment they receive will be successful. At present the only way to move positively towards these ideals is through research.
So What will the Beard look like?
Here is the pre & post Beard of 2012 and me on Jan 1

The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation
The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne is one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, and has been caring for our most vulnerable children and their families for 150 years.
The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation is responsible for raising and distributing funds to support the work of the hospital. All donated funds are used to bridge the gap between government funding and the world-class standard of healthcare the hospital provides.
Generous community support helps to sustain the hospital’s role as international leader tackling some of the world's biggest paediatric health issues. Donated funds drive the hospital’s growth, are utilised only for purposes of excellence, and support the most innovative, life-changing programs and initiatives – that would otherwise not exist – in line with the hospital’s priorities across the areas of research, leadership & training, technology & equipment, and patient and family centered care.
